Think SD card slots are dead? Think again. Just because we now live in a world of portable usb devices and 80 Gps Thunderbolt 4 cables, doesn’t mean SD card slots for phones are non-existent.
Although not as common as they once were, SD card slots are still around. We can find them in the Moto G 2026, Samsung Galaxy A35 5G, CMF Phone 2 Pro, Sony Xperia VII, Moto G Stylus 5G 2025, Moto G Stylus 5G 2025 and Samsung Galaxy A26. Phone manufacturers have realized that there still exists a niche market for buyers who favor having to expand their file storage without the need of long cables. And this demand will only increase as more and more phones ditch this valuable slot.
Secure Digital (SD) was introduced in 1999 by SanDisk, Panasonic (then known as Matsushita), and Kioxia to replace the MultiMediaCard (MMC) format. Much faster and more portable than MMC cards, SD cards came handy for photographers and digital music producers who needed expandable storage on the go.
This utility expanded to cellphones with the Motorola E398 in 2004 being the first. Eventually the trend continued to spread throught the cellphone industry and by 2018, nearly 90% of smartphones included an SD card slot.
Well, why did this slot disappear from most phones by 2020? We can blame it on several factors – cost cutting, cloud storage, risk of damage/theft and low usage. By 2026, almost all smartphones have now eliminated SD card storage.
But it’s not over. You can still use this valuable feature on a few new smartphones sold in 2026.
